Things to do in Ouidah
A historic town on the coast of Benin, some forty kilometres from Cotonou, Ouidah holds the memory of the Atlantic slave trade and is one of the cradles of Vodun. Here is what to see in a day or a weekend, and where to discover contemporary Beninese art in the heart of town.
The Slave Route and the Door of No Return
From Chacha Square, where captives were once sold, the Slave Route runs some four kilometres down to the ocean, lined with statues and monuments. It ends on the beach at the Door of No Return, a memorial facing the Atlantic.
The Python Temple and the Basilica
In the centre of Ouidah, the Python Temple, a major Vodun shrine, stands opposite the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. This face-to-face between two faiths sums up the town. Renesansi gallery is right next to the Basilica.
The Sacred Forest of Kpassè
Dedicated to King Kpassè, founder of Ouidah, the sacred forest shelters revered trees and sculptures. A shaded walk a few minutes from the centre.
The Ouidah History Museum
Housed in the former Portuguese fort, it tells the story of the town, the slave trade and the ties between Benin, Brazil and the Caribbean.
Vodun Days in January
Every year around 10 January, the national Vodun holiday, Ouidah hosts Vodun Days: ceremonies, dances, Egungun and Zangbeto masks, concerts and exhibitions draw visitors from all over the world. It is the best time to see the town come alive, and to discover Beninese artists who draw on these traditions.
Contemporary art at Renesansi gallery
Between two visits, step into Renesansi. The gallery shows Beninese and African artists, masters of tradition and emerging talents, in exhibitions that change through the year. Works are for sale, and the team welcomes you Tuesday to Sunday.
